April 2, 2009

I am hoping that the story of the FLDS will continue to work out as a path of awareness for all of us. There are still many different viewpoints from those of us who believe in the sanctity of human life, especially the god-created spirit of the individual. If we but see the many gifts our Father puts before us on the road, we will have hope...and we will not so easily deny the gift we see in those different from us.

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff has an excellent blogpost about Abraham Lincoln http://utahag.blogspot.com/2009/02/happy-200th-birthday-mr-president.html ...it moved me very much to understand what Lincoln wished to pass on to us.

The Story of the FLDS

I grew up in a society that came from Oregon Pioneers and the Methodist church. It was a time of belief in the family, with the husband taking care of the wife and children, along with the knowledge we must all respect our country and our God. In those days we expected our country to respect us back. I now follow the story of what is happenning to the FLDS with great sadness. I can tell they are honest, hardworking and faithful people...It seems almost as if they are being persecuted for a belief system that my generation grew up with. It is not American to punish a whole group for what a few might have done.

It used to be honorable for a man to marry his girlfriend and take care of his family, even if they broke the "rules" to start a family. Now those rules have changed in to "laws" and if persecution is allowed because of an unpopular belief system, then we are all at the mercy of others every time the belief system changes.

I thank all of the FLDS who have endured so much and brought to the world's attention the reality of what we are dealing with. I believe very strongly we must see each other as a child of God, and be ready to pick each other up as needed. I thank all the others who have reported for and given help to the FLDS. It is an unfolding story that affects all of our freedoms. I do know that we should not as a nation be forced to accept everything that is Gay/Lesbian or Women's Lib in the name of freedom of choice. It is only an opinion and it is also a "belief system". I pray that we can sort this out so that respect can once again be real, and people will have the right be be a family unit again.
